Grauben is a very careful thinker: she sees things other people miss. She says the Martians have fooled us all! This is far worse than we imagine! This is what she said:

Everybody seems to think this was the main invasion, and that we are safe because of bacteria. I have looked at the evidence very carefully and I think the opposite is the case. I think this was a fact finding mission, and the main invasion will involve germ warfare.

To see why, the first thing you must understand is Martian intelligence. Look at the size of Martian brains: We are like animals to them!

Do animals understand what humans are doing? Does an animal understand the enormous economic system behind modern farming? Do wild animals realise that their wild spaces have been carefully managed for generations? Do animals have any idea of the scale of human activity?

A cow might only see the inside of one building, and be aware of eight or nine other buildings. Just as we know one planet and are aware of a few others in our solar system. Like the cow, we cannot understand how distant places might communicate. But should we give up? No! House cats have defeated humans! So have ants!

For us to survive, we need to look at what we really know, and what we don't know:

  1. An invasion?
This was only ten cylinders. Even allowing for reproduction, the initial invasion force was only thirty machines, and maybe fifty individual Martians. Yet there are billions of humans. And the Martians were highly vulnerable for the first day, so why land in a busy city? And they didn't attack until we entered their crater. Something doesn't add up.
  2. Already here?
The cylinders' impact should have destroyed any living thing inside. Our shells proved that a powerful impact can kill a Martian, even if protected inside a tripod machine. Nobody actually saw a cylinder hit. They saw something from the sky, then an explosion, then a cylinder. Perhaps the cylinders were already buried, and Mars simply triggered them?
  3. Bacteria from Earth
The Martian bodies only had Earth bacteria. Is there no bacteria at all on Mars? That seems very unlikely, as bacteria grows naturally almost everywhere, and has good uses as well as bad. Purely Earth bacteria argues for a purely Earth origin.
  4. Bodies from Earth
Despite the far larger numbers of dead humans, the dogs and birds preferred to eat the dead Martians. But if the "Martians" were really from Mars, why would animals recognise them as food?
  5. Mechanical?
When I watched the Martians, it seems like the slow and weak biological forms were being controlled by the fast and efficient mechanical forms. At first I dismissed this as impossible, yet that is what I thought I saw.
  6. Planned to die?
We do not know that they were ignorant of bacteria. Perhaps the mechanical units planned for the biological servants to die. Why? A test run for a larger invasion? Or a trick? Or to scare us then change our behaviour?
  7. Drinking blood
If they really knew nothing about human bacteria they must have known nothing about human biology. Then it was extremely careless to rely on injecting human blood directly into their bodies! We know these creatures are not reckless. A more likely purpose is that they were taking samples. The sterile biological bodies are simply hosts for whatever bacteria and biological material they can find. Now they have that information the easiest way to defeat humans is not through heat rays, but by sending small pods of specially designed bacteria! Martians can easily stay sealed inside machines if they want. They are not in danger from bacteria: we are!
  8. Galactic?
We now know that a more technologically advanced race is out there. And if there are two in a single star system, there must be others. The galaxy is very old, and technology advances exponentially. So if planets can wage war, so can star systems.
  9. Underground?
the surface of Mars looks mostly dead. So the Martians probably live underground. If they live underground there, why not here as well? And what better way to distract us than to make us think they come from Mars?

Now, my underground hypothesis is just a guess. All we really know for sure is that these are more advanced than us, they can wipe us out easily, and they are connected to Mars. For humans to survive, we need technology like theirs. Mankind needs to learn space travel, and quickly! ...Or do we have any better ideas?
