Shamhat explains the secrets of the temple:
"At the start of every year, everybody has a week's holiday where they come to the temple and learn the story of Marduk:

"First there's a three day prelude, as people arrive. We temple workers sing a poem about mankind's fear of darkness and the unknown. This is the world of Enkidu: he knows nothing about history or science. His life in the wild is hard: he could be killed at any time.

"Day 1:
We begin the Enuma Elish, the seven tablets that tell why cities and civilisation exist.

"They tell how Marduk, a young god, sees the chaos in the world and vows to create order. He defeats Tiamat, the dragon of the oceans (which represents the dangerous power of nature). He then goes to organises the world for our comfort.

"Day 2:
Our king, Gilgamesh, accepts Marduk (and hence the gods) as his ruler. This shows that the king is subject to law just like we are.

"Day 3:
We use puppets to act out how Marduk's people defeat everyone else. This shows how, if we unite under one leader, we can do anything! United we win, divided we lose.

"Day 4:
We celebrate our success. This is the climax of the festival! We carry statues of the gods through the city and all get drunk and eat too much. The message: life is good when you win!

"Day 5:
Even the older gods submit to Marduk. This shows how even the gods know you have to work together, and not fight among yourselves.

"Day 6:
We sing and tell stories about the great battle, where Marduk defeated the dragon. Lots of drinking and fun!

"Day 7:
Marduk marries Ishtar, goddess of love and war, and thus unites the world of the living and the dead. The message is that not even death can defeat us if we are united.

"That ends the Enuma Elish and the history lesson. The next day we have a 'state of the union' address where Gilgamesh tells us what he's achieved last year, and what he plans for this year. We all sing songs about life and love and fun.

"And the next day it's back to work for another year.

"So you see, cities exist so we can live together and work together, so we have a good life. That's the message: Life should be good! That's what I'm going to tell Enkidu."

Should I ask Shamhat to remind me who is she? Or just watch and see Shamhat work her magic with Enkidu? Or do something else?
